One of our favourite spots to sit in the late afternoon is on
top of Mt Tinbeerwah. At various times of the year I feel
different responses to the changing colours and magical
patterns of nature you can see from the lookout. I have made several paintings from the feelings that arise when I am there and each one is an entirely new experience.

I began ‘An Upturned Sky’ after a particularly beautiful
early autumn evening. The abundance of light was wonderful, the colours soft blues, pinks and yellow/greens were subtle, yet singing. There was a notion of sky, trees, water and light blending together as one and the same. In that moment the horizon seemed enormous, blending in to the landscape with the feeling of everything being tipped upside down.

This piece became an open space, working with the concept of abundance of light, delicate mark making and the feeling of needing the finished painting to function like a universe in itself, with many elements co-existing together, yet sometimes separately. It has become one of my favourites pieces of the past 12 months.
